at Houston 5, Pittsburgh 2: Roger Clemens posted his 345th win, giving up one run in six innings to help the Astros complete a three-game sweep. Clemens, who gave up four hits, yielded two runs or fewer for the eighth time in 10 starts. His 2.32 earned-run average since June 22 leads NL starters.
St. Louis 6, at Cincinnati 1: Former Angels Jim Edmonds and Scott Spiezio hit two of the three homers given up by Bronson Arroyo to help the Cardinals gain a split of the four-game series. The split left the Cardinals 3 1/2 games ahead of the second-place Reds in the Central Division.
at Milwaukee 8, Chicago 6: Doug Davis improved to 3-0 in his last four starts despite a 6.09 ERA. Mark Prior (1-6) gave up six runs -- five earned -- and four hits in three innings, and all four batters he walked scored. He is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA since July 21.
Florida 9, at Washington 6: Josh Willingham’s four hits included a homer, fellow rookie Dan Uggla hit a two-run shot and the Marlins, who were 11-31 on May 21, improved to 42-30 since then, a .583 winning percentage.
