Former Indonesian President Suharto may have been determined to be too sick to stand trial on corruption charges, but he celebrated his 85th birthday with a party for as many as 400 people at his home.
An aide said the family distributed 85,000 packages of rice, noodles, oil, soap, books and pens to poor people in Jakarta, the capital, and to victims of a recent earthquake in Central Java. The gifts are worth about $543,000.
