Tim Brown’s June 4 article on Hank Aaron provided a timely and helpful reminder: Here was a man who played hard and long and fair, broke a record that for decades seemed unbreakable, and did so despite the types of on-field and off-field pressures and challenges we typically call to mind only in the case of Jackie Robinson.
Here is a true American sports hero of surpassing talent, professionalism and graciousness customarily not receiving his due, not in an age when cheaters prosper and the asterisk is king. Hammerin’ Hank, like the Sultan of Swat, was the real thing.
