Mexican Miners and Metalworkers Join Strike

MEXICO CITY — Tens of thousands of Mexican miners and metalworkers joined a strike Wednesday in two disputes that crippled output at the country’s biggest mines, metals refineries and steel mills.
Grupo Mexico, the world’s third-largest copper producer, said its Cananea and La Caridad copper mines were closed a second day by a wildcat strike of workers over safety issues.
Workers also closed the massive Fresnillo silver mine, run by Penoles, the world’s largest producer of refined silver, in support of a union leader.
The company said workers at most of its other mines and operations also were on strike.
A blast in a Mexican coal mine Feb. 19 killed 65 men.
