Police Fire at Motorist Speeding Toward Them

Police fired at a man as he fled after trying to steal a vehicle Sunday night, authorities said.
The man, who was not identified, escaped in unknown condition.
Law enforcement officials saw him rummaging in a parked pickup truck about 11:30 p.m. in the 27000 block of Walfred Way. When they ordered him out, authorities said, he jumped into a nearby vehicle and sped toward the officers. One, fearing for his safety, fired.
The vehicle was found abandoned nearby.
The officer who fired was put on paid administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.
