Israeli General Sidelined in Middle of War Quits

JERUSALEM — An Israeli general pushed aside in the middle of the recent war against Hezbollah in Lebanon announced his resignation Wednesday, the army said.
Maj. Gen. Udi Adam, head of the Israel Defense Forces’ northern command responsible for securing the border with Lebanon, asked to leave his post “as soon as possible,” the army said in a statement.
“The chief of staff has accepted the request to begin the process of his replacement,” the statement said.
Israeli media reported that Adam had several disagreements with Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz, the army’s chief of staff, during the war.
Military analysts said Adam was seen as too cautious, and Halutz appointed Maj. Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky, the army’s deputy chief of staff, to command the war.
The 34-day conflict with Hezbollah ended in August with a cease-fire brokered by the United Nations. A total of 159 Israelis and at least 854 Lebanese, most of them civilians, were killed.
