Afghanistan’s link with terrorism

IN “ ‘Wilson’s War’ Is More Than Ancient History” [by Elaine Dutka, Dec. 26], producer Gary Goetzman, in concurring with the reporter’s suggestion that “it’s too simplistic to suggest that Charlie’s campaign set 9/11 in motion,” gives a response that approaches historical ignorance. He states that “no Afghans, as far as we know, have been involved in terrorist acts against our country.”
It is historical fact that U.S. assistance of the Afghan freedom fighters led to the rise of militant Islamic fundamentalism, the consolidation of the Taliban, the formation of Al Qaeda, and to the rise of Osama bin Laden. Would he not consider 9/11 an attack on our country? Is there too much playing going at his company Playtone, and not enough reality and fact checking?
