DEA probes agent’s suicide, sources say

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is investigating the apparent suicide in Glendale of one of its agents, several law enforcement sources familiar with the incident said Wednesday.
Agent Jeffrey Bockelkamp, 30, who was assigned to the DEA’s Los Angeles field office, was being questioned in connection with an internal investigation at the time of the shooting Friday afternoon.
Sources said that during a break in an interview at federal offices in the 300 block of North Brand Boulevard, Bockelkamp excused himself to go to the restroom. Moments later, a gunshot was heard.
The Manhattan Beach resident was pronounced dead at the scene.
DEA officials refused to comment on the case.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said that a “security hold” had been placed on Bockelkamp’s autopsy.
A native of Scranton, Pa., Bockelkamp served as a Montgomery County, Md., police officer before joining the DEA. He is survived by his parents and two brothers.
