Tenor wins top Zachary prize

Tenor Michael Fabiano, 22, from Philadelphia won the $12,000 first prize at the 35th annual Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition finals Sunday at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in L.A.
Soprano Jennifer Black, 28, from New York took the $10,000 second prize. Mexico City tenor David Lomeli, 25, won the $8,000 third prize.
A total of $57,750 was awarded, including a $7,000 fourth prize to Chicago baritone Brian Mulligan, 30, and a $6,000 fifth prize to Philadelphia baritone Christopher Bolduc, 26.
Ten finalists, drawn from 243 applicants, participated in the finals with the Los Angeles Performing Arts Orchestra conducted by Frank Fetta.
