State cutting jobs to help trim deficit

Gov. Donald L. Carcieri announced in Providence that he would eliminate more than 1,000 state jobs to help close an estimated $200-million deficit.
Under the plan, 1,016 full-time positions -- or about 7% percent of the current state work force -- will be cut eliminated through layoffs and attrition, Carcieri said. The job cuts are intended to save roughly $100 million.
The Republican governor said he would also seek close the rest of the deficit by seeking concessions from labor unions and cut cutting spending on social programs. State government is Rhode Island’s largest employer.
