‘The Road’ wins a first Quill

Chalk up another award for “The Road,” Cormac McCarthy’s dark novel about a father and son making their way through a postapocalyptic world. Having picked up the Pulitzer Prize earlier this year, it was named winner Monday of the Quill Book Award for general fiction.

Now it will compete for the Quill book of the year prize against winners in 18 other categories, such as Al Gore”s “The Assault on Reason” (history/current events/politics), Laura Lippman’s “What the Dead Know” (mystery/suspense/thriller), Nora Roberts’ “Angels Fall” (romance), Walter Isaacson’s “Einstein: His Life and Universe” (biography/memoir) and Kevin Young’s “For the Confederate Dead” (poetry).

The winners were selected by booksellers and librarians from nominations made by editors at Publishers Weekly. Members of the public can cast their vote for book of the year at www.quillsvote.com. Winners will be announced in New York on Oct. 22.
