* Boston 2, at Oakland 1: Daisuke Matsuzaka struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter, giving up two hits and one run over 6 2/3 innings to help the Red Sox beat the Athletics in Oakland’s home opener. Kevin Youkilis went three for four with a triple and scored twice as the teams resumed a season-opening series that began in Tokyo last week.

* at New York 3, Toronto 2: Melky Cabrera homered and made two outstanding catches in center field as the Yankees beat Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay to make Joe Girardi a winner in his debut as their manager.

* Texas 5, at Seattle 4: Josh Hamilton, acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in the off-season, hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off All-Star closer J.J. Putz, giving the Rangers the victory over the Mariners.

* Angels 9, at Minnesota 1: Vladimir Guerrero and Garret Anderson combined for six hits and five runs batted in, and Jon Garland breezed through his first start for the Angels.
