The Border Patrol says it is investigating how an illegal immigrant died in custody at its checkpoint station at San Clemente.
Spokesman Daryl Reed said Friday that the Mexican man was combative when taken into custody July 8.
Agents used pepper spray and took him to the checkpoint station on Interstate 5, where he died.
The cause of death had not been determined.
The man was identified as 36-year-old Tomas Sanchez Orzuna. His sister Rosario Sanchez Orzuna says he crossed the border illegally three years ago and was a busboy in San Clemente.
