Galaxy trades Ruiz and is expected to sign Lewis

The Galaxy traded Guatemalan striker Carlos Ruiz to Toronto FC in exchange for a future draft pick. By shedding one of Major League Soccer’s all-time leading goal scorers, Los Angeles has created salary cap room and a place on the senior roster that Coach Bruce Arena will use to sign 34-year-old U.S. national team veteran and former UCLA midfielder Eddie Lewis.

Ruiz, 28, and Lewis will be on opposite sides when the U.S. plays Guatemala in Guatemala City tonight in a World Cup qualifying match.

Since entering the MLS in 2002 with the Galaxy, Ruiz has notched 82 goals in 150 games, but the emergence of Edson Buddle has seen Ruiz’s opportunities limited.

Ruiz rejoined the Galaxy after spending the last several seasons in Dallas. In 2008, Ruiz has appeared in 10 games for Los Angeles, scoring one goal.

Indiana’s Crean gets 10-year deal

New Indiana men’s basketball Coach Tom Crean got the job security he wanted, signing a 10-year contract worth at least $23.6 million.

USC will play three games in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan, starting Nov. 20, and will play at Oklahoma on Dec. 4 in the Pac-10/Big 12 Hardwood Series as part of the 2008-09 schedule that was announced.

The Atlanta Falcons cut receiver Joe Horn, 36, who had a guaranteed $2.5 million salary for 2008.

Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning, who had surgery July 14 to remove an infected bursa sac in his left knee, attended practice and said he wanted to play in the Colts’ first regular-season game, Sept. 7 against Chicago.

Bush lawsuit is put on hold

The civil lawsuit against Reggie Bush was put on hold again when the running back’s attorney appealed a judge’s ruling.

Bush’s attorney, David Cornwell, said he expects “multiple, multiple months” before an appellate court decides on the matter.

The delay affects NCAA investigators who have been waiting to see testimony and other evidence from the case. They want to know if Bush received improper benefits while playing at USC and, just as important, if the school knew.

At issue is a San Diego judge’s denial of a defense motion to have the case settled by confidential arbitration.

The appeal again postpones the depositions of Lloyd Lake and his former business partner, Michael Michaels, who allege they gave cash and gifts to Bush and his family while Bush played at USC.

Yastrzemski has triple bypass surgery

Hall of Fame outfielder Carl Yastrzemski, the last player to win the Triple Crown in the major leagues, underwent triple bypass surgery in Boston.

Yastrzemski, who turns 69 on Friday, was an 18-time All-Star and spent his 23-year career with the Boston Red Sox. In 1967, he led the American League in batting with a .326 average, home runs with 44 and runs batted in with 121.
