Put patient needs ahead of HMOs’

Assemblyman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) must be commended for standing up to the powerful health maintenance organization industry by presenting AB 1155, which would toughen the state’s power to fine insurers for failing to pay medical bills. (“Bill puts bite on deadbeat insurers,” July 15.)
The state Department of Managed Health Care has proved to be extremely ineffective in representing the interests of patients and healthcare providers.
Taxpayers deserve a more regulated DMHC where their needs, not those of insurance companies, become a priority.
