ASEAN censures Myanmar regime

Southeast Asian nations have issued a strong rebuke to military-ruled Myanmar.
The criticism came at an annual security meeting of the foreign ministers from the 10 countries that form the Assn. of Southeast Asian Nations. The meeting opened today.
At the end of a working dinner Sunday, the ministers issued a statement expressing “deep disappointment” that the rulers of Myanmar, or Burma, had extended the detention of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
However, Myanmar Foreign Minister Nyan Win said Suu Kyi might be freed within six months at the end of the maximum six-year period that a political detainee can be held by law.
