San Diego 4, at Philadelphia 2: Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer and Chris Young pitched six effective innings. After giving up a two-run homer to Chase Utley in the first, Young kept the Phillies off balance, yielding three hits over his last five innings. “When he needed to make a pitch he made the pitch,” said Padres Manager Bud Black. “The Phils threatened a couple times and [Young] made the pitch to halt them.”
at St. Louis 5, Cincinnati 2: The Cardinals won a franchise-record 18 games in April. Last year the Cardinals needed 43 games to win No. 18. The total surpassed the previous best set in 2000 and 2006, when they were 17-8 each time, although this season they played three more games while going 18-11.
at Chicago 19, Milwaukee 5: It was the Cubs’ biggest outburst since a 20-1 rout of the Dodgers on May 5, 2001. And the Brewers had not allowed that many since they gave up 19 to Colorado at Coors Field on Aug. 8. Rookie Geovany Soto hit two three-run homers.
Pittsburgh 13, at New York 1: Pirates right fielder Xavier Nady, traded by the Mets for Oliver Perez and Roberto Hernandez in 2006, went three for three with three RBIs.
at San Francisco 3, Colorado 2: Jose Castillo ended a 450 at-bat homerless drought with a tiebreaking shot to left leading off the seventh inning. It was his first homer since Aug. 14, 2006, for Pittsburgh against Milwaukee.
at Washington 3, Atlanta 2 (12 innings): Felipe Lopez’s bases-loaded single to left with none out in the 12th gave the Nationals their first three-game winning streak since opening the season 3-0.
at Arizona 8, Houston 7: The Diamondbacks (20-8) became the season’s first 20-game winner, a franchise record 19 of them in April. Arizona won its eighth series out of the last nine.
Dodgers 13, at Florida 1: Chad Billingsley had eight strikeouts, giving him 40 in 27 2/3 innings.
