Homes evacuated in bomb scare

Officers evacuated several homes Saturday night after investigators found what appeared to be a pipe bomb in the residence of a gang member, a police spokesman said.
Investigators performing a routine probation check at the home in the 300 block of Cummings Lane about 9:45 p.m. spotted a “small improvised explosive device” in a bedroom, said Sgt. David Marander of the Long Beach Police Department.
Officers cleared neighboring homes and summoned the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad, which “rendered the device safe” early Sunday morning, Marander said.
Police arrested two people but did not disclose their names or information about possible criminal charges against them.
