U.S. disputes U.N. report on death toll

U.S. investigators disputed a preliminary U.N. report that said there was “credible evidence” that as many as 90 civilians died in a raid on a western Afghan village.
The U.S. military found that five to seven civilians and 30 to 35 Taliban militants were killed in an operation Aug. 22 in Aziz- abad. The United Nations, after interviewing villagers, backed a finding by the Afghan government that all the victims were civilians.
Reports from the Afghan and U.S. sides have been at odds, and no conclusive evidence has surfaced.
