Ex-deputy gets 15 years in shooting

A former San Diego County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison for the 2006 fatal shooting of his wife during an argument. Lowell Bruce, 42, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.
Prosecutors said Kristin Maxwell-Bruce, 38, was killed after she grabbed her husband’s service revolver. Before being sentenced by Superior Court Judge Michael Wellington, Bruce tearfully apologized to the couple’s two sons.
Maxwell-Bruce’s family angrily accused the district attorney of not filing a murder charge against Bruce because, at the time of the incident, he was still with the Sheriff’s Department.
