HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

WEDNESDAY’S RESULT

Huntington Beach Edison 54, Alta Loma 39

Leading contributors: Sophomore guard Dylan Garrity scored 23 points, junior center Ryan Walker had nine and junior forward Jeff Trojan eight for host Edison. Junior forward J.J. Obrien scored 11 points for Alta Loma.

The scoop: Leading by one point entering the fourth quarter, Edison closed out its Southern Section Division II-AA first-round playoff victory with a 23-9 run. The Chargers made 15 of 15 free-throw attempts for the game and held Obrien, who had been averaging 27 points, to less than half his average with an assortment of double teams.

Why it matters: Edison showed it could defeat a quality opponent without guard Kyle Boswell, sidelined by a back injury. “It was a very tough first-round game,” Chargers Coach Rich Boyce said. “We’re happy to get it out of the way.” Edison advanced to play Burbank Burroughs on Friday at a site to be decided by a coin flip.

Records: Alta Loma 13-14, Edison 17-10.

GAME OF THE DAY

Los Angeles Jordan (22-4) at Crenshaw (18-3)

Tonight, 7

Why it matters: This is the third time these teams have met in the first round of the City Section playoffs in the last five years, with each winning once. Jordan Coach Van Myers said he sees several similarities between this year’s matchup between the 11th-seeded Bulldogs and the sixth-seeded Cougars and the 2005 game won by Jordan, 60-58, at Crenshaw: The teams have the same seedings, the game will be played at Crenshaw and the Bulldogs are feeling disrespected after finishing undefeated in the Eastern League. Jordan is led by 6-foot-5 forward James Boyd, among the nation’s leading rebounders, averaging 22 a game. Crenshaw features junior swingman Duece Zaid and junior guard Reynaul Baker.
