GAME OF THE DAY
Orange Lutheran (18-3, 4-0) at No. 1 Santa Ana Mater Dei (19-0, 4-0).
Tonight, 7:30.
Why it matters: Mater Dei has beaten Trinity League teams by 30, 49, 39 and 47 points, so this is the chance for Orange Lutheran to offer a rare challenge to the Monarchs. It will be difficult. Mater Dei has a starting five that includes players headed to UCLA, USC, Stanford and North Carolina. On Wednesday, the Monarchs defeated St. John Bosco, 70-23, and they had just come back from a 3,000-mile trip to the East Coast and had to take finals. Orange Lutheran will counter with a young team that features an outstanding freshman guard in Gabe York. Lutheran Coach Chris Nordstrom is a former Mater Dei assistant who shares Angels season tickets with Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight, but don’t expect McKnight to take it easy on the Lancers.
