Pat White stands out at Senior Bowl

West Virginia quarterback Pat White led two scoring drives and passed for 95 yards as the South defeated the North, 35-18, Saturday in the Senior Bowl at Mobile, Ala., a showcase for many of college football’s top prospects.

The most prolific running quarterback in major-college history, White stood out among a group of high-profile signal callers and was the most valuable player of the game.

Alabama’s John Parker Wilson also played well, completing seven of 13 passes for 56 yards and scoring on a four-yard run in the first quarter.

Lineman Robert Ayers of Tennessee was named the game’s outstanding defensive player.

BASEBALL

Tigers sign reliever Lyon

The Detroit Tigers added to their bullpen, signing free-agent right-handed pitcher Brandon Lyon to a one-year contract.

Lyon, who had 26 saves for the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, will have a chance to replace the retired Todd Jones as the Tigers’ closer..

Lyon has played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox and Arizona, and has 51 saves in his career.

Gisin edges Vonn in Italy

Dominique Gisin of Switzerland won her second downhill in a row, edging Lindsey Vonn and Anja Paerson in one of the most prestigious races on the women’s World Cup circuit at Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy.

The outcome was similar to what happened at last weekend’s downhill in Zauchensee, Austria, where Vonn finished 0.17 of a second behind joint winners Gisin and Paerson.

Didier Defago of Switzerland won a World Cup downhill race for his second victory in eight days at Kitzbuehel, Austria. Bode Miller finished tied for fourth.

Shani Davis of the United States was sidelined after cutting his right leg with his blade during the 500 meters at a World Cup speedskating event in Kolomna, Russia .

Davis nicked his leg with 200 meters left and finished on one leg. He sat out the 1,000, which he leads in the World Cup standings. The overall world sprint champion said he didn’t need to be hospitalized but wasn’t sure about competing today.

Ransom, 57; former Trojan

Walt Ransom, a backup quarterback on USC’s 1978 national-championship football team and a first-round pick in the January 1968 major league baseball draft, died Wednesday in Newport Beach. He was 57.

Ransom suffered a stroke last week, according to a family member.

Ransom was an All-City baseball and football player at South Gate High, and also played at East Los Angeles College.

Hall of Fame and longtime North Carolina State women’s basketball Coach Kay Yow died after a decades-long fight against breast cancer. She was 66. Story, Section B.
