Two nuclear submarine sailors are accused of beating a man and leaving him near death on a street in Portsmouth, N.H.
Seamen Gerald Smith of Hawaii and Sandy Portobanco of Inglewood did not contest in court that police had probable cause to arrest them in the May 22 beating of Stephen Huntress.
Huntress is a former town council member in Kittery, Maine.
He suffered serious injuries, including skull fractures, and remains hospitalized.
The sailors, from the submarine Greeneville, say Huntress insulted the Navy.
