CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / LOS ANGELES

The next citywide election in Los Angeles is more than a year away. But that’s not stopping an aide to City Councilman Greig Smith from launching his 2011 campaign for a council district in the northwest San Fernando Valley.
Smith chief of staff Mitchell Englander put up his campaign website and announced he has picked up endorsements from City Controller Wendy Greuel, L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca and his boss, who plans to step down at the end of his four-year term.
Smith has been on the council since 2003 and, along with Councilman Bernard C. Parks, is considered one of its two most fiscally conservative members. Smith was a longtime aide to Councilman Hal Bernson, who served 24 years before being forced out by term limits.
