South Bend to lose Hall of Fame to Atlanta

The College Football Hall of Fame, which never managed to attract the number of visitors its organizers hoped for after moving it to South Bend, Ind., in 1995, is being moved to Atlanta to bring it more exposure, organizers told the city.

The National Football Foundation notified the city of South Bend in a letter that it is terminating its agreement with the city when its current lease ends on Dec. 31, 2010.

“We take this action not because of any failure on your part, but because we have an opportunity to take the exposure of the Hall of Fame to an entirely new level,” wrote Archie Manning, chairman of the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame.

Big Ten takes action

The Big Ten has suspended Purdue offensive guard Zach Reckman for Saturday’s game against Notre Dame after it reviewed Reckman’s late hit at the end of the Northern Illinois game. Reckman dropped a right forearm on NIU’s Sean Progar after Progar recovered a fumble and slid to end Purdue’s final desperation play in the Huskies’ 28-21 win.

Akron quarterback removed from team

Suspended Akron starting quarterback Chris Jacquemain has been removed from the team for the rest of the season. Zips Coach J.D. Brookhart suspended Jacquemain for last Saturday’s game against Indiana for violating team policy. On Wednesday, Brookhart said Jacquemain will not return but will remain on scholarship.

Lee’s status unclear

Penn State’s Sean Lee hopes to play in Saturday’s Big Ten opener against Iowa, though the standout linebacker is unsure when he’ll return to practice after injuring his knee. Lee said he thought the medical staff would be cautious “if I’m not moving well and playing at a 100%.”

Wake Forest suspends safety

Wake Forest has suspended safety Junior Petit-Jean for the rest of the season. School officials said they suspended the redshirt sophomore for violating undisclosed team rules. Petit-Jean is listed as the backup to Alex Frye at free safety.

The annual Georgia-Florida game will be staying in Jacksonville. The Georgia athletic board endorsed a new six-year contract that would keep the game in the northeast Florida city through 2016. . . . Michigan is banning purses, diaper bags and all other bags of any size from Michigan Stadium as a security measure. An arrest in Colorado related to a terrorism investigation touched off national warnings. Michigan says in a statement that “adjusting security measures is the prudent thing to do.”
