Newport Beach Film Festival

When, where: April 22 to 29, various venues

Highlights: Now in its 11th year, this event will present hundreds of features, shorts, documentaries and animated films. Special showcases of youth films, action-sports movies and family flicks are on the schedule, along with celebrity galas.

Cost: $12 general admission; $10 for seniors and students; $40 for film and a party. All-access pass $450.

Rush Ranch Open House

Highlights: This 20th annual open house event celebrates nature and includew arts and traditional crafts.

Opening Day on the Bay

When, where: April 25, Crissy Field to Pier 39

Highlights: San Francisco’s sailing season kicks off with a decorated boat parade featuring more than 120 historic vessels, as more than 300 sailboats and yachts, chartered and private, take to the bay.

BIG SUR

Mother Hips Family Hipnic

When, where: April 30 and May 1, Fernwood Resort

Highlights: Only 300 tickets will be sold for this intimate outdoor music festival. Folksy rockers the Mother Hips host. Onsite camping will be available.

Whole Earth Festival

When, where: May 7 to 9, UC Davis
