Highlights: Orange County’s fair features classic carnival rides, a demolition derby, culinary contests and concerts headlined by the likes of ZZ Top, Train, Martina McBride and Joan Jett. The fair is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Cost: $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12, free for active military with ID. Parking $7.

Tour des Fleurs
When, where: July 17, various locations in Half Moon Bay
Highlights: For the 19th year, the growers of Half Moon Bay invite the public to tour their nurseries, gardens, greenhouses, wineries, fields and farms.

Harvest Century Bicycle Tour
When, where: July 17, throughout Sonoma County
Highlights: Take a 23-, 37- or 60-mile bike tour during this annual event for experienced and amateur riders. Along the way, you’ll see Sonoma’s vineyards, redwoods and the Russian River.
Cost: $85 a rider; free for spectators

DEL MAR
Del Mar Scene
When, where: July 21-Sept. 8, Del Mar Racetrack
Highlights: Catch some of Del Mar Racetrack’s seven-week season, including the July 21 opening-day celebration. Throughout the summer, horse racing combines with free rock concerts, including performers Weezer, Ozomatli and ZZ Top. Racing takes place Wednesdays through Sundays.

OXNARD
Oxnard Salsa Festival
When, where: July 24-25, Plaza Park
Highlights: The 17th annual celebration of all things salsa — the condiment, the music, the dance — draws about 45,000 people each year for Latin music, food tastings, a vendor marketplace, children’s activities and huge dance floor.
