Giffords is no longer in critical condition

Reporting from Tucson — The medical condition of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz) has been upgraded from critical to serious because she is no longer on a ventilator, the Tucson hospital that is treating her announced Sunday.
In a statement posted at 4:30 p.m. on the website of University Medical Center, the hospital said:
“The congresswoman continues to do well. She is breathing on her own. Yesterday’s procedures were successful and uneventful.”
Giffords was shot in the head by a gunman who opened fire on constituents waiting to see the congresswoman outside a Safeway grocery store in Tucson on Jan. 8. Her husband, astronaut Mark E. Kelly, has been by her side at the hospital.
The gunman, identified by police as Jared Lee Loughner, 22, has been accused of killing six people and wounding 13.
