Movies: Kevin Smith brings ‘Red State’ to New Beverly Cinema

MOVIES
Kevin Smith’s self-distributed new film “Red State” is a departure for the director, as it’s his premiere foray into the horror genre, even as there remain vestiges of his trademark snappy banter and offbeat humor. But don’t get the wrong idea: “Red State” is no comedy. The controversial film, which stars Michael Parks, Melissa Leo and John Goodman, will screen for one week and Smith will attend each showing (except those on Wednesday), with an audience Q&A to follow. New Beverly Cinema, 7165 W. Beverly Blvd., L.A. 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Fri.-next Thu. $20 (some shows sold out). (323) 938-4038. https://www.newbevcinema.com.
