UCLA Film & Television Archive fetes Schrader, Pasolini, Kramer

UCLA Film & Television Archive is celebrating the films of Paul Schrader, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Stanley Kramer this summer at the Billy Wilder Theater.

“Hardcore: The Films of Paul Schrader,” opens July 12 and continues through Aug. 5. Titles in the series include 1980’s “American Gigolo,” 1992’s “Light Sleeper,” 1982’s “Cat People,” and his newest film, “The Canyons,” with Lindsay Lohan. Schrader will appear in person at the retrospective on Aug. 4 and 5.

“Pure & Impure: The Films of Pier Paolo Pasolini,” opens Aug. 2 and features several films from the controversial Italian director’s oeuvre, including 1974’s “The Arabian Nights,” 1971’s “Decameron” and 1975’s “Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom.” Luce Cinecitta in Rome provided the prints for the festival, which continues through Aug. 29.

“Champion: The Stanley Kramer Centennial,” commences Aug. 9 and continues through Sept. 29. The award-winning producer/director (“The Defiant Ones,” “Inherit the Wind”) never shied away from exploring hot-button social issues including racism. Among the films set to screen are 1949’s “Champion” and 1950’s “The Men,” which marked Marlon Brando’s film debut.
