Zac Efron is on the prowl for a plus-one. The teen heartthrob turned bro-comedy specialist is set to star in Fox’s upcoming movie “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” The Times has confirmed.
Variety first reported that the 27-year-old actor had joined the comedy, which Jake Szymanski (a “Saturday Night Live” and “Funny or Die” alum) is directing from a script by Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien.
Slated for release July 29, 2016, “Mike and Dave” concerns two brothers, one of whom will be played by Efron, who look for wedding dates online, only to have their ad go viral.
The film represents a reunion for “Neighbors” star Efron with writers Cohen and O’Brien. That film, released by Universal in May, was a box-office hit to the tune of $268 million worldwide, on a modest $18-million budget.
Efron’s other upcoming movies include the DJ drama “We Are Your Friends” with Emily Ratajkowski and the comedy “Dirty Grandpa” with Robert De Niro.
