FIFA is staggering — and few people on TV are celebrating quite as much as John Oliver.
Oliver, the British-born host of HBO’s news satire “Last Week Tonight,” has been on a tear against the scandal-plagued group that governs pro soccer. And now that top FIFA officials have been indicted by American officials and chief Sepp Blatter has resigned from his post, Oliver, a diehard soccer fan, is jubilant.
On Sunday’s show, he made good on an earlier promise to eat McDonald’s food, wear flamboyant gold sneakers from Adidas and swill a “disgusting” Bud Light Lime if Blatter left his post. McDonald’s, Adidas and Anheuser-Busch (which makes Bud Light beer) are key FIFA sponsors, though as Oliver admitted, it’s unclear if the companies had anything to do with Blatter’s exit.
Even so, “a promise is a promise, and I’m a man of my word,” Oliver told his studio audience, before hoisting his gold sneaker-covered feet on his desk and quickly scarfing a few bites of McDonald’s hamburgers. Then, after a lengthy introduction that negatively compared Bud Light Lime to various stomach-churning substances, he chugged an entire bottle of the beer and pronounced it “delicious.”
That’s not all. Jack Warner, a former FIFA official named in the indictment, paid for time to answer the charges on TV in Trinidad, his home country. That special was called “The Gloves Are Off.” So Oliver has purchased five minutes on Trinidad TV to answer Warner with his own special.
Oliver’s title? “The Mittens of Disapproval Are On.”
