Susan Spano’s Postcards From Rome: The neighborhood
Via Cavour at Via dei Fori Imperiali. The latter street was built between the forums of Caesar and Augustus during Rome’s Fascist era. (Susan Spano / Los Angeles Times)
The Coliseum is like a spaceship from a distant time. Whenever I catch sight of it, I think, Beam me up, Scotty. (Susan Spano / Los Angeles Times)
313 Cavour, a terrific enoteca, or wine bar, also serves a compelling selection of appellation controle prosciutto. (Susan Spano / Los Angeles Times)
Louis Big Shoes is my favorite store on Via Cavour, with sizes suitable for Shirley Stoler (of Lina Wertmüller’s Seven Beauties”). The clerk, who was standing outside in big cowboy boots when I shot this, told me photography wasn’t allowed. “Come mai?” I asked, which is the Italian way of asking why, with deep, existential overtones.
