A mural in Valley Village
Valley Village resident Barbara Black holds Alexander Garcia’s hand as he starts painting over a section of the 75-foot mural on a wall next to her home. Black had commissioned young artisits to paint the mural to add a splash of color to the drab alley.

Black received a fine from Los Angeles for $356 after a neighbor complained about the mural. The city threatened to fine her an additional $1,925 if the artwork wasn’t removed.

Black, a retired costume illustrator for film and television who has lived in her home 42 years, said she got the idea for the project from a January article in the Los Angeles Times about a backyard mural painted by a 94-year-old Mid-City resident.
