24 apprehended when boat washes ashore in Crystal Cove

Twenty-four men and women reportedly trying to enter the country illegally were apprehended when the panga-style boat in which they were riding came ashore near Crystal Cove State Park, authorities said.
The passengers -- 23 from Mexico and one from Honduras -- were all apprehended when their 25-foot boat was spotted around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent Jerry Conlin.
Officers from the Orange County Sheriff’s and Newport Beach Police departments, and the California Department of Parks and Recreation were involved in the apprehensions. Authorities said no narcotics or other contraband was found on the boat and the passengers were taken to a nearby border patrol station for processing.
The passengers ranged in age from 17 to 54 and all were trying to enter the U.S. illegally, according to a border protection press release.
Officials seized the boat, which will eventually be destroyed, according to Conlin, who said he didn’t know the exact location where the boat came ashore.
