Charges filed against man who allegedly punched gas station clerk

A man who allegedly punched a gas station clerk last month in Lakewood in a dispute over 41 cents was charged Friday with felony assault and mayhem.
Kendrick Ruth, 35, allegedly punched the female clerk at a Chevron gas station in the 4900 block of Lakewood Boulevard on Sept. 7.
The clerk allegedly told Ruth the price of a Swisher Sweets cigar was $1.41 and Ruth was 41 cents short, according to KCBS-TV and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“Just happened so fast ... I didn’t think he was going to hit me ... and he just like socks me,” the unidentified clerk told KCBS.
Ruth, a Long Beach resident, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of assault at a motel near Long Beach and Artesia boulevards, authorities said.
If convicted of the charges, Ruth faces a maximum eight years in prison, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
