Earthquake: 3.1 quake strikes near Death Valley National Park

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Saturday afternoon 32 miles from Searles Valley, Calif., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 1:42 p.m. Pacific time at a depth of 0.6 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was 42 miles from Ridgecrest, Calif., 80 miles from California City and 84 miles from Porterville.
In the past 10 days, there have been no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
