Los Angeles County sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the deaths of two people, including a woman who was shot to death, discovered inside a burning house in Hawthorne on Friday afternoon, authorities said.
A passing motorist saw smoke coming from the residence in the 13200 block of Jefferson Avenue and called 911, authorities said.
Firefighters and police forced their way into the house and found a woman in the living room who was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to her head, the sheriff’s department said in a statement.
Firefighters also found a man in the bathroom of the residence. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
The sheriff’s department said the identities of the victims and the official causes of their deaths remain unclear.
“It’s a very complex investigation,” sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Boese said.
