San Francisco police continue investigation of human bones found in planter

San Francisco police are continuing their investigation into last month’s discovery of human remains found in a planter box.

A resident made the discovery Nov. 23 while gardening, police said. The resident brought the bones to the San Francisco Police Department’s Northern Station, and a report was filed, said Grace Gatpandan, a public information officer.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office later determined the bones were human, Gatpandan said. Cadaver dogs from the Marin County Sheriff’s Department searched the area — the 1300 block of McAllister Street — and indicated that more human remains may be present, police said.

Authorities excavated the area where the dogs alerted, but no additional remains were found, Gatpandan said.

KGO-TV spoke with the woman who said she found the first bone and who said the planter boxes were put on the porch by a tenant in 2007. A couple of weeks ago, she told the station, she was going to save the plants and throw out the boxes and that’s when she found a human bone in the soil.

While one media outlet reported the bones belonged to a child, police and the medical examiner’s office would not confirm that information.

“At this point, the investigation is still ongoing,” Gatpandan said.
