San Diego County SWAT standoff ends with suspect’s apparent suicide

A five-hour SWAT standoff in the southern San Diego County community of Bonita ended Friday night when sheriff’s deputies discovered the suspected gunman dead of an apparent suicide.
Deputies had sent a robotic device into the home and found the 45-year-old man dead of an apparent self-inflicted wound and a rifle nearby, authorities said.
The apartment building where the man lived was evacuated after neighbors reported hearing shots around 5 p.m.
A man and women were taken to the hospital with wounds described as not life-threatening. A second woman was injured while trying to escape the shooting through a window.
Sheriff’s deputies surrounded the apartment building, assisted during the incident by the California Highway Patrol and officers from the Chula Vista, National City and Carlsbad police departments and by Cal-Fire medics.
The Red Cross provided shelter for apartment residents ordered to leave their homes.
