A Southern California Edison worker was killed and three others injured Thursday in Riverside County during what the company described as an accident involving underground equipment.
Cal Fire and Riverside County Fire crews responded to the intersection of Murrieta and Ridgemoor roads in Menifee about 7:45 a.m., according to a department report. One person died at the scene, the statement said, and three others were taken to area hospitals for minor smoke inhalation.
Southern California Edison confirmed the incident in a statement Thursday afternoon, and a spokeswoman said it was unrelated to a nearby copper theft that left 22,000 customers without service in the area on Wednesday.
Information about the victim was not released, pending notification of next of kin. An investigation into the incident is underway, the company said.
