Sunset ramp closure on the 405 forces drivers to find alternatives

Traffic on the Moraga Drive offramp on the northbound 405 Freeway was already backed up early Saturday – a sign of what motorists can expect over the next four months.
That’s how long the northbound Sunset Boulevard offramp will be closed as work continues on a freeway widening project. Moraga is the next exit after Sunset.
The offramp will be closed until Dec. 1 as crews build a longer exit, which officials say will add 60% more capacity in one of the Westside’s most congested intersections. Crews will also widen the Sunset bridge over the freeway and an undercrossing.
The new offramp will feature two right-hand turn lanes to eastbound Sunset and one left-turn lane to westbound Sunset.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority recommends that drivers who normally exit on westbound Sunset take the westbound Wilshire Boulevard or Moraga Drive offramps.
For eastbound Sunset drivers, the recommended detour is the eastbound Wilshire offramp.
The construction is part of Metro’s ongoing effort to widen the 405 Freeway. Officials say the project is slated for completion in 2014, a year later than expected, and more than $100 million over budget.
