The Los Angeles Police Department evacuated the Beverly Center mall after a shopper alerted police that a suspicious package had been placed in his car without his knowledge.
LAPD spokeswoman Norma Eisenman said the call from the shopper came in at noon and officers were still in the process of evacuating the building shortly before 1:40 p.m. The car was parked in the mall’s multilevel garage.

Eisenman said the LAPD bomb squad was sent in to check on the package and they were still on the scene. “The situation has not been rendered safe,” she said.
It was unclear how many people were evacuated or what time the evacuation began.
