Gov. Jerry Brown to sign budget in San Diego

Reporting from Sacramento — Gov. Jerry Brown will head south to San Diego to sign the state budget on Friday morning, his office announced.
The governor is being joined by Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) and Senate leader Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento).
Brown has not spoken publicly about the $156.4-billion spending plan approved Sunday by the Legislature.
When the governor and top lawmakers announced a deal on the budget last week, he issued a statement calling it “solid and sustainable.”
The budget — which includes a $108-billion general fund, $7.3 billion larger than last year — includes new money for preschool, welfare payments and the controversial bullet train.
It also includes a deposit into the state’s rainy-day fund and a 30-year plan for tackling the $74-billion shortfall in the teacher pension fund.
The budget takes effect July 1.
