Wayne Community College in N.C. evacuated after gunman kills staffer

Police are searching for a gunman who entered a building at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, N.C., on Monday and shot and killed a print shop operator, school officials and authorities said.

The suspect was identified at Kenneth Stancil, who is accused of entering the Wayne Learning Center, which houses the cafeteria and library, and opening fire, hitting longtime staffer Ron Lane, school spokeswoman Kim Best told the Los Angeles Times.

After the shooting around 8 a.m., the suspect fled and was being sought with the aid of helicopters, officials said.

Officials at a morning news conference said they believed the men knew each other.

Best said there was no indication of a motive.

All of the students and staff have been evacuated from the school, Best said.

Classes were canceled for Monday. It was not known if classes would resume on Tuesday, Best said.

Authorities said they were searching the area for a male, about 5 feet, 11 inches tall, with a goatee and a tattoo over his eye.

Also locked down was the Wayne County Day School, a nearby private school with pupils ranging from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.
