And they’re off

Down the closing stretch of elections, journalism is all about the horse race. We size up the tickets, handicap the odds, check the stakes, speculate on the reins of power. We tout the new breed of longshots suddenly in the running, jockeying for position, maybe pulling neck-and-neck with the big-money favorites.
Cartoonists are right there with the pack. Jen Sorenson snorts and stamps her feet at attack ads. Tom Toles nags the president for whipping up support with Democrat/terrorist daily double-talk. And, when a former contender comes from out of nowhere, then stumbles, well, that’s a gift horse Jimmy Margulies will gladly kick in the teeth.
Like railbirds across the board, we’re excited by a photo-op finish maybe one that comes down to a nose a bulbous, oversized cartoon nose.
