Baseball: Birmingham’s infielders are small in size but have big gloves

Birmingham has reached the City Section Division I semifinals, and its infielders don’t exactly have great size but they sure know how to field.
Third baseman Victor Mercado is 5 feet 5. Shortstop Ivan Lomeli is 5-6. Second baseman Ray Ruvalcaba is 5-6. And first baseman Audelio Camacho is 5-7.
“They’re just scrappy,” Coach Matt Mowry said. “They’re quick and get to a lot of balls.”
Birmingham plays Narbonne on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at USC. Chatsworth plays Palisades at 3 p.m. in the other semifinal.
