Boys’ basketball: Bishop Montgomery wins Mission Prep tournament

No one should forget that Bishop Montgomery is the defending Southern Section Open Division champion. Gone is Stephen Thompson, but the Knights are off to a 9-0 start after routing Washington Bellarmine, 64-40, on Wednesday night in the championship game of the Mission Prep tournament in San Luis Obispo.
Tournament MVP Jordan Schakel scored 21 points. Ethan Thompson added 17 points and David Singleton 10. Singleton held Malachi Flynn to 13 points. Flynn scored 39 points in the semifinals. Bishop Montgomery is scheduled to face unbeaten Chino Hills on Jan. 30 in the Fairfax State Preview Classic.
Dorsey won the consolation title with a 64-54 win over Windsor. Tommie Groce scored 22 points. Lafayette Dorsey added 17 points.
In the championship game of the Oaks Christian tournament, Burbank Burroughs defeated Oaks Christian, 78-71. Ross Lee led Burroughs with 25 points. Max Heidegger scored 36 for Oaks Christian.
Thomas Frank had 22 points in St. Bonaventure’s 52-46 win over St. Bernard.
