Boys’ basketball: Gary McKnight gets coaching victory No. 1,000

It took only 33 seasons, but Santa Ana Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight has joined the 1,000-win club. Of course, he’s the only member in California history.
The Monarchs gave their veteran coach win No. 1,000 in his coaching career on Friday night, a 67-44 win over Corona del Mar in the semifinals of the Corona del Mar tournament.
Mater Dei will face Tustin, a 48-42 win over Huntington Beach Edison, in Saturday’s final.
Rex Pflueger scored 17 points and freshman Michael Wang had 15 on an historic night.
